(Eucalyptus globulus) (FR) Eucalyptus Globulus (EN) Southern Blue Gum
There are around 600 species of Eucalyptus around the world, of which about fifty have become acclimatized in the Mediterranean basin. Native to Australia and Tasmania, Eucalyptus was introduced to France in 1860 to clean up marshy regions, its long, water-hungry roots allowing land drainage. Eucalyptus is also a source of pulp, an excellent fuel and can be used as lumber. Its leaves have always been used by the aborigines to treat fevers and as a healing agent. The eucalyptol they contain is used in many pharmaceutical preparations to treat colds and respiratory inflammation. Eucalyptus is antiseptic, bactericidal, and febrifuge.
