(Melaleuca alternifolia) (FR) Tea tree (EN) Tea Tree
This “tea tree”, which is unrelated to tea, is a thorny shrub with yellow, purple, or white flowers that grows wild in swampy areas of Australia and New Zealand. It was an Englishman, James Cook, who called this plant “tea tree” because he used it to replace his tea. The aborigines chewed the leaves, made herbal teas and poultices. The antiseptic properties of tea tree essential oil have been known for a long time. Relegated to the background by the massive use of synthetic antibiotics, it is now back in the spotlight.
