Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

Plant:

The Nutmeg tree is from the Maluku Islands in Indonesia and can reach 20 meters. Similar to apricot in shape (see photo below), its fruit – nutmeg – takes on a red or yellowish color which, after drying, offers a seed similar to a fibrous stone, with a sweet woody aroma and a touch of spicy camphor.

Nutmeg is delicious in kitchens all over the world, thanks to its characteristic flavor that gives a special touch to many dishes, but this spice also plays a major role in health, in cosmetics and in the field of perfumery, due to its properties: minerals, vitamins, and essential oils. However, nutmeg should be consumed sparingly – at most, one to two grams per day – because of its high potential, since the Human Being is not ready for very intense doses. An intake of five grams or more of nutmeg can cause total or momentary incompatibilities in the body and cause auditory and visual hallucinations, motor loss, and even depersonalization.

The daily consumption of nutmeg should be done only with a pinch of powder or a little grated.

Properties:

Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-degenerative, detoxifying, digestive, relaxing …, are some of the properties offered by nutmeg.

For 100 grams of nutmeg, we find 525 kcal of energy, 5.8 grams of protein, 36.3 grams of fat, 49 grams of carbohydrates, 21 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugar and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium or zinc and vitamins, especially the B complex.

How to consume:

Nutmeg can be consumed as a powder, oil, or natural seed. In the latter case, in order not to lose the aroma, the nutmeg should be crushed or grated just before placing it on the prepared dish, such as meats, mashed potatoes or vegetables, cheese, milk…

To make an infusion, add only half a teaspoon to a liter of water.

Contraindication:

Pregnant (can cause abortion), and lactating women, and pay attention to the amount consumed, as it should be in a very moderate way, just one to two grams per day. With higher doses, you may develop total or momentary side effects, such as auditory and visual hallucinations, uncontrolled motor skills, and even depersonalization.
