(Artemisia drancunculus) (FR) Estragon (EN) Tarragon
Tarragon is a semi-evergreen perennial herb, commonly cultivated for its fragrant leaves for condiment use. Originally from Russia and more precisely from the great steppes of Siberia, tarragon owes its name to the Latin “dracunculus” which means little dragon. In signature theory, the sinuous roots of tarragon resemble snakes, making the ancients think of effectiveness against snakebites, and more broadly against the bites of poisonous animals.
Tarragon mainly contains chavicol methyl ether. It is the same main constituent of basil, which explains the olfactory similarity between these two plants and also its antispasmodic properties which stand out, and particularly at the level of neuromuscular spasms, helps to stop hiccups instantly.
