Flaxseed is obtained from flax native to Asia. In its chemical composition, we find several phytochemicals, among which alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid and lignans, 20% to 28% of soluble and insoluble fibers, phenolic compounds with antioxidant action, about 30% to 40% fat, 20% to 25% protein, 4% to 8% moisture and 3% to 4% ash, in addition to vitamins A, B, D, and E, and minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and sulfur. Lignans are phytoestrogens found in the cell walls of vegetables and possessing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties. Because it is similar to estrogen, lignans can have an effect on menopause and decrease the risk of breast cancer. Flaxseed has been studied for its possible protective effect against cancer, osteoporosis (increases calcium absorption), and its role in relieving symptoms of menopause (helps fight hot flashes).
